I know when people see a headline like this, or anything to do with addressing the reality of demonic spirits, they’ll skip it or scoff at it. Neither of those responses will equip you to deal with the reality that we live in a supernatural realm occupied by angels.
Oh, that’s different you may say with a sigh of relief. Well, hold on because there are heavenly angels who are God’s messengers and ministering spirits and there are the one-third of the angels who fell along when Satan was cast out to earth.
7 And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, 8 but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. 9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Revelation 12:7-9
Satan wasn’t vanquished into some realm of the unknown. He was cast to the earth right where we are! The Bible is unmistakable that there are both celestial and demonic beings among us. But this is where our skepticism or outright disbelief leaves us vulnerable.
Possession – If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior, you’ve been bought and paid for 100% by the blood of Christ. So the short answer is – No! You cannot be possessed by the devil.
Oppressed– But, you can be Oppressed. The two are very different. Whereas possession is an internal control by demonic spirits, oppression effects Christians through an external force. Oppression is defined: “to crush or burden by abuse of power or authority” or “to burden spiritually or mentally : weigh heavily upon”. Ever felt like that? Something dark you just couldn’t shake!
While your salvation guards against possession, you must take the authority God has given to rid yourself of demonic oppression. See Luke 10:19
“Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”
Oppression only has opportunities for attaching itself to your spirit if you allow it an opening. It’s like a burglar at night. Leave windows open and you’ll find you’re not alone. Secure yourself with prayer and submission to God and your buttoned up tighter than a drum.
James 4:7 gives you the action to take for getting the devil out of your life. You must submit yourself to God and resist the devil. When you do this, the devil must flee. That word flee is a powerfully packed action word. It doesn’t mean the devil can stand next to you or watch from across the street. he will flee!!
7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Once you resisted the devil and he flees, God’s ministering angels will come and attend to you. It’s exactly what Jesus did in the wilderness after being tempted for 40 days. Jesus was tempted, but He submitted to God the Father before telling the devil to hit the road. Immediately, the angels came to tend to Him just as they will tend to you.
10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only. 11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. Matthew 4:10-11
There is no neutral ground in this war between good and evil. Not choosing Jesus is in fact choosing Satan by default. You must make a decision and take a stand, otherwise you will be possessed. While that doesn’t mean your head will spin like Linda Blair, it also doesn’t. Make the right decision today if you haven’t already.
