Stay Salty My Friend

Stay Salty My Friend

I love telling people to, “Stay Salty.” I think most of the time they mistake it for being sassy, but that’s kinda like 180 degrees opposite of what God meant. Jesus used this illustration because salt was vital for preserving the good in food. Maybe today, it would be translated as “Stay Frosty or Frigid,” but again, not the same meaning.

Staying Salty comes directly from Matthew 5:13:

Salt and Light

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.”

Jesus wasn’t messing around with this. We cannot afford to be super Christian one day and super sinner the next. Does that mean we must be perfect? No, none of us are, and that’s why Jesus intervened as the final atonement for our sins. But, we have a choice to make. We can, despite how we feel at the moment, choose to be that salt.

We also get to decide our words to others. Will we affirm them and give light, or rip them apart and deliver darkness? God loves us so much that our following Him to become that salt and light completely depends on our making our own choice. I mean seriously, how could it be a loving relationship if we were forced to comply?

Time To Choose

So, what do you choose? Here’s another nugget on the side of being salt. God also makes it very clear that if we think straddling the fence is going to cut it, you’re wrong. Yes, He’s a loving, merciful God, but He’s also a God of order in a chaotic world. Sitting the fence or being lukewarm is about as unwelcome in the kingdom as anything else.

See what He says about it in Revelation 3:16

So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.

He’d rather you be against Him than to claim you are in Him while you’re living in the world. It’s good to be salty, or should I clarify; it’s good to be Spiritually Salty!
