Fit By 50 / wk 2

First off, big THANK YOU for the awesome response to last week’s inaugural posting of Fit by 50. People shared tips, victories, challenges, well wishes, but unfortunately–no one said – “No way, you look 35.”

Well, maybe that one message just didn’t make it’s way to my inbox, so thanks to whoever you were.

Week 2 is in the books, and I gotta say it was fantastic. Ever heard of a George Foreman grill? Where have I been the last 25 years? In a restaurant!!

Although cycling is my favorite sport for exercise, the out-of-school grind for finding kiddo care eliminates that possibility almost entirely. Those rare free moments on the road involve quick 20 -25 mile sprints, and are time well spent with friends and members of the Bayou Country Cyclists.

I’ve committed to trying crossfit at Momentum Gym, and made it nearly each day since they opened two weeks ago. Guess what? They have kid care on site. AMEN.

I’m not going to get all CrossFit Games and WOD on ya, but I gotta tell you there’s nothing like suffering with company. Misery really does love it.

My background is athletics, and the coaching staff (Katherine, Lauren and Alex) leading each session has been a great change of pace compared to biking or swimming with only your thoughts to motivate you.

The magical scale:

This morning I stepped on it with all the confidence and exhaled air I could muster and remain conscious. I don’t know why we do that, as if air weighs pounds inside your lungs.

Anyway – press to activate scale, step on it, get weight, say “Oh crap.”

– step off scale, step to activate, step on, I’ve lost 2 pounds.

Now I’ve got a decision to make – either keep stepping off and on the scale until it registers a weight I like, or buy a new scale.


1. Maintain sensible diet

2. Exercise at least 4 times next week

3. Buy new scale but not obsess over readings.

4. Encourage you to join me and share experience and commitments.

5. Be positive about the quest for fitness. Why do we mumble when we discuss health and fitness?

6. Don’t skin shins during box jumps (Okay, so I threw in a WOD term)
