What Do You Want?
I was asked what did I want God to give me. I rattled off prayer requests I had about being able to give to others. But I was asked more specifically, “What good gift can God your Father give to you?”
Again, I was stumped and offered more details about giving charitably. They didn’t have to repeat the question again because I’d understood the point, but I had nothing. God loves us and as any good parent does, we find joy in giving to our kids. God the Father is the same way and He is a God of miracles who loves to give good gifts.
Unworthy
After days of my being unable to think of anything I wanted from God, I realized that it wasn’t as much about being 100% content as it was not feeling worthy of receiving something solely for myself. I was not a good receiver because I always assumed there was a catch to true receiving or that I had to reciprocate the giving.
Giving from the heart requires nothing and expects even less. The gift to the giver is in the giving out of love. The gift to the receiver is accepting the gift without guilt, pride or comparison. I was afraid to ask God for something special just for me. I thought that would make me selfish, but in reality it meant I wasn’t open to being a good receiver by not allowing God to love me through His gift of giving out of an abundance of His heart. I was in fact, blocking His blessing.
What Do You Really Want?
Later the night, while deep in sleep, the Holy Spirit woke me and simply asked, “What do you want?” I answered from my heart and not from a list I felt pressured into creating or some conscious obligation to include someone else. I whispered what had been buried deep in my spirit. I knew it was there and that it was right because it was God who gave me the desire of my heart.
The disturbance that had agitated my spirit was actually conviction for not being vulnerable enough to openly receive a gift out of love. With my one-word reply to the Holy Spirit, I felt that tension fall off and I drifted back to sleep.
Are You Willing?
Are you willing to ask with a faith that will activate the promises of heaven? Can you give in love? Better yet, are you able to be a good receiver of good gifts from the Father?
“Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights,
with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.” ~ James 1:1
